Papers, 1701-1770.

Four vols. of papers kept by Rev. John Barnard, minister of the First Church of Marblehead, Mass. (Congregational). One vol. lists sermons delivered from 1701-70, including dates, locations, and texts. A notebook of religious exercises dates from 1716-19 and contains meditations and self-examinations, most entitled "An Examination" or "At the table of My Lord." The third vol. is Barnard's autobiography written in 1766. (cont'd) The fourth vol. is the manuscript of Barnard's "A New Version of the Psalms of David; with Hymns out of the Old and New Testament; fitted to the Tunes used in the Churches," written in 1751 and published under the same title in 1752. The vol. also includes statements of approval as to the quality of Barnard's translation, written by local ministers in 1751, and annotations, some of which were incorporated into the published edition.
